Women artists of all ages, disciplines and levels of artistic experience residing in Milwaukee and surrounding area were invited to participate in an informal, nonjuried celebration and exhibition of art held at RedLine Milwaukee, as part of Support Women Artists Now Day (SWAN Day), an international celebration of women
artists and the power of their work to change the world. “Women artists are creating change in their communities and around the world,” said Martha Richards, the cofounder of SWAN Day. “This day of celebration will help people imagine what the world would be like if women’s art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives.” All works in SWAN Day MKE contain a “swan” element or theme, drawing inspiration from this symbolic bird and its place in nature, travel, folklore and history. It’s an animal that represents transformation, contrast, inner beauty and creativity.

Along with each piece, on display will also be artist’s responses to three questions, designed to cultivate an awareness of community, both among women artists all over the world and within our geographical community of Milwaukee:
1)Who is your favorite woman artist and why?
2)What do you need today and What do you have to offer?
3) What’s one thing that makes you feel supported as a woman artist in Milwaukee & the world?

Intimate Nature: Kristin Gjerdset & Jamie Bilgo Bruchman at Urban Ecology Center July 10-Sept 28, 2014
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 10th 5-7pm
Artists speak at 6:00pm

"Kristin sees the world underfoot -- often overlooked, yet as deserving of reverence as grand scenery. Hers is the world of tiny shrubs and flowers, visited by winged beings and fur-bearing creatures. Jamie Bilgo Bruchman notices the natural world in our everyday lives and asks questions. Where do things come from? How do they work? What does this mean?"

I will be showing monotypes from my "Cream City Impressions Series", where I intentionally direct these questions at our hometown of Milwaukee.
Hope you can join us!

In my latest work, the Algae Bloom & Bloom Pattern Series, I reference large formations of algae occurring in various bodies of water, which are referred to as “blooms.” The phenomenon can occur when there is a sudden increase in nutrients or a change in water temperature. Though aesthetically beautiful, they can severely impact and overwhelm the surrounding environment. Some forms are even toxic. The word “bloom” is usually associated with its pleasant flower form, but as a verb it also means “to appear or expand suddenly, to be vigorous” and “to flourish, to grow.” In the Bloom Pattern Series, I explore the term through literal use of botanical forms, but also through “blooms” of multiplying cells, paint applications and repeating decorative patterns.

Black & White Show, Plus "Got Art?" Event
7/12/2011
Exciting news - TWO Art Openings this Friday in Washington Heights!
They are literally right next door to each other, so I hope you can join me:

Show #1:
The Black & White Show: Fashion Inspired Works by Gina Glembin & Jamie Bilgo
July 15-August 31, 2011

at Boutique Revolution
5209 W. North Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53208
414-871-0624 Tues-Sat 10-4pm
www.fashionrevolution.com

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, July 15th 6-9pm
With refreshments, snacks & (most importantly) Gourmet black & white Cupcakes by Tina Chronister of Secret Sweets Bakery! (We encourage black & white ensembles, too!)

Gina & Jamie have talked about doing a black & white show for a long time. They thought this would be a great opportunity showing at Boutique Revolution, given the always-present combination of black & white in the fashion (& art) world. Clean, classic, elegant & contrasting - but there's a wonderful grey area in between all the tints and shades.

Jamie Bilgo:
This black & white series is based on looking at black and white patterns found in fashion textiles, on animals in nature and within Japanese designs. In combining these aesthetic influences, I used various black & white materials including pen, acrylic, watercolor, feathers, leaves & India ink. The off-white paper for these drawings (sourced from test proofs of old intaglio prints) reminded me of an aged black and white photograph.

Gina Glembin:
This Black and White portrait series consists of pen, ink and watercolor. Each portrait is based on different looks found in 2011 fashion layouts. An emphasis is placed on the focal points of personal expression found in the use of accessories and hair styles.

PRESS RELEASE
CONTACT: Melissa Musante
melissam@marnonline.com or 414-305-2109 www.artsinmilwaukee.org

April 8, 2011– Milwaukee, WI Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) is pleased to announce their 2nd Annual Art Treasure Hunt to be held in conjunction with Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day (April 15-16), the Westside Artwalk (April 29-30), Waukesha’s Art Crawl (May 7) and culminating with a Closing Gala on May 13. The Art Treasure Hunt offers artwork at selected venues by some of the Greater Milwaukee Area’s top visual artists.

Designed to entice new art collectors to the market this event is quickly becoming a favorite for established collectors as well. The event challenges people who have never thought to buy original art work to think about collecting art by local artists. Though the works are valued from $50.00 to $600.00, each piece will be offered for the affordable price of $25.00 to $75.00. In this way MARN breaks the number one barriers to collecting “I can’t afford it”.

Each piece will be offered at different venue during each of the three artwalks happening across the area from April 15th – May 7th. Every time a patron buys a work their “passport” will be stamped. Once a patron collects four works they will be eligible for a grand prize drawing held at the closing Gala – a “tourist in your home town” package including a stay the Pfister, dinner at the Mason Street Grill, and tickets to the ballet.

The ticketed Closing Gala will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at MARN’s headquarters and gallery located at 5407 W. Vliet Street in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee. Tickets are available for the cost of $25.00 and may be purchased during the run of the event or by going to artsinmilwaukee.org. The event will feature food from area restaurants, live music, and a variety of auction items. Plus patrons will have the opportunity meet many of the artists participating in the event.

“We’re so grateful for the support of not only the artists on this event but the art supply vendors who have donated materials so the artists don’t have any out of pocket costs” said Melissa Musante, Executive Director. “This is a way our artists can give back to our organization and that the public can collect locally while supporting our cause, sustainability for Milwaukee’s extraordinary creative class.”

About Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN)

MARN empowers all types of creatives with access to educational and professional resources and creates a network for communication and collaboration.
